American Goldfinches

February 11, 2019

One morning about a week ago - when we were having some nice weather - I heard a bird singing very loudly.  It sounded like it must have been sitting right outside the kitchen window, but when I went to look, it wasn't there.  Before I had a chance to leave the kitchen, it started in again.  This time it seemed to be coming from just outside the kitchen door.  But... nothing there either.  So I stood looking through the closed storm door thinking I might be able to spot it if it started up again.  When I heard it after a few minutes, it took me a bit to realize it was coming from a Goldfinch sitting on a branch just above the finch feeder hanging from the deck.  I could hardly believe that big song was coming from such a little bird.  I went to get my camera in hopes that I might be able to record the song.  But by the time I got back with my camera, the bird had moved on.

These pictures were taken over the past few days.

Both the males and females have their "winter coats" on these days - a bit drab compared to their spring and summer finery.
